Why Winter Tires Matter in Chatham-Kent
Below 7°C, all-season rubber turns hard and slick. Winter tires are designed to stay flexible — and the grip difference is dramatic.

Stopping distance is the metric that matters. At 50 km/h on packed snow, a vehicle on winter tires stops about 35% shorter than the same vehicle on all-season — often the difference between a clean stop and an insurance claim.
Ontario insurance discount: Most major Ontario insurers (TD, Aviva, Belairdirect, Intact, and others) offer a discount on comprehensive coverage when you run winter tires from November through April. Discount is typically 2–5%. Ask your insurance company — many drivers don't realize they qualify.
The 3PMSF Symbol — and Why It Matters
If a tire doesn't have this symbol, it isn't a winter tire. Full stop.
The Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) is the only certification meaning a tire has been tested and proven for severe winter conditions. Look for the snowflake-inside-mountain symbol on the sidewall.
The M+S marking alone is not enough. "M+S" stands for Mud + Snow and dates back to the 1970s. It indicates a tread pattern that looks capable of moving snow, but says nothing about cold-weather rubber performance. Many all-season tires carry M+S without being winter-rated.
Every winter tire we sell carries the 3PMSF designation.
When to Switch
🍂
Fall Changeover
Switch ON when daily highs consistently drop below 7°C. In Chatham-Kent that's typically late October to early November. Don't wait for the first snow — the swap line at every shop in town fills up overnight.
🌸
Spring Changeover
Switch OFF when daily highs consistently stay above 7°C. Usually mid-April for Chatham-Kent. Running winters into May wears them out fast — the soft compound isn't built for warm pavement.
Book early. Mid-November and mid-April are our busiest weeks. Booking in early October (or early March for spring) gets you your preferred date and time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need winter tires in Chatham-Kent?
Yes. While Chatham-Kent winters are milder than further north, temperatures regularly drop below 7°C from November through March, plus snow and ice events. All-season tires lose more than 30% of their grip below 7°C. Winter tires can be the difference between stopping in time and not.
When should I book my winter tire install?
Book in early October. Demand spikes in mid-November when the first snow hits and appointments fill quickly. Booking early also catches manufacturer rebates, which typically expire mid-November to early December.
What does 3PMSF mean?
Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake. It's the only certification meaning the tire is rated for severe winter conditions. Look for the snowflake-inside-mountain symbol on the sidewall. Without it, a tire is not a true winter tire even if it has the M+S marking.
How long do winter tires last?
Four to six seasons typically (40,000–80,000 km), depending on brand and driving habits. The rubber compound is softer than all-season for better cold-weather grip, so they wear faster but stop dramatically better in winter conditions.
Can I use all-weather tires instead?
All-weather tires (3PMSF certified, like Michelin CrossClimate2 or Nokian WRG4) are a one-set year-round alternative offering better winter performance than all-season but slightly less than dedicated winter. Good compromise for drivers who don't want seasonal swaps but live in moderate winter climates.
Do you offer winter tire storage?
Yes — $50/season per set. Tires are tagged with your name and vehicle, stored on labelled shelves, and ready when you book your next seasonal swap.
Should I run winter tires only on the front (or rear)?
No. Never install winter tires on only two wheels. On a front-wheel-drive car with only front winters, the rear end will slide out unpredictably in corners. Always install a matched set of four for safety.
Do I need new TPMS sensors with winter tires?
Only if your winter set is on separate rims and you don't have sensors in them yet. Most customers either move sensors back and forth (we do this at every swap) or buy a second set of sensors for the winter wheels. Either approach works — sensors are about $60/each installed.
